چکیده

One issue of interest pertaining to the development of a numerical model applicable to the nonlinear propagation of jet noise is the behavior of spectral predictions at large distances. In this study, a recorded noise waveform from a military jet aircraft is numerically propagated via a hybrid time-frequency domain solution to the generalized Burgers equation that incorporates spherical spreading and atmospheric absorption and dispersion. Numerical results show that the spatial rate of change of the difference between the nonlinearlyand linearlypredicted power spectra appears to approach constant nonzero behavior at high frequencies. This asymptotic relationship is analogous to that predicted by analytical theory for initiallysinusoidal plane and spherical waves.

On the possible role of short-range shock formation and coalescence in jet aeroacoustic source characterization

The number of jet and rocket noise studies has increased in recent years as researchers have sought to better understand aeroacoustic source and radiation characteristics using predominantly linear reconstruction techniques. While jet and rocket noise is often finite-amplitude in nature, little is known about the existence of shock formation and coalescence close to the source. A numerical expe...

Use of Stochastic Turbulence Models in Jet Acoustics

There are many approaches to determine the sound propagated from turbulent flows.  In hybrid methods, the turbulent noise source field is computed or modeled separately from the far-field calculations.  To have an initial and quick estimation of the sound propagation, less computationally intensive methods can be developed using stochastic models of the turbulent fluctuations.   In this paper, ...

The Multiple Pressure Variables Method for Fluid Dynamics and Aeroacoustics at Low Mach Numbers

The incompressible limit of a compressible fluid, when the Mach number tends to zero, is a singular limit due to the fact that the governing equations change their type. The propagation rate of the pressure waves become infinite. Based on asymptotic results the multiple pressure variables (MPV-) method is reviewed as it may be used for the construction of numerical methods in this low Mach numb...
